Here our team in Charlotte had a long cream sectional that still looked fine from a distance, until you looked at the seats. Up close, the cushions people use most had gone gray, and the chaise had a dull patch right in the middle.
What we found
A large sectional in a cream textured weave: three seats on the long side, a wide curved chaise at the end, and loose seat and back cushions throughout. The soiling was uneven. The seat cushions on the long side were gray with scattered dark spots, and the chaise had a grayed center around a lighter patch. Other cushions were barely soiled at all.
That pattern is normal: seating soil builds up where people actually sit, from skin oils, clothing and everyday dust, while the rest of the sofa stays lighter.
Getting started
We vacuumed every cushion and the frame, ran a spot test on a hidden area, and applied a pre-treatment for body-oil and everyday soiling, with extra on the most-used seats. Then we took the cushions off and extracted them one by one with hot water, the standard order for our upholstery cleaning in Charlotte.
The tricky part
On a big sectional with uneven soiling, the challenge isn't just getting the dirty cushions clean. It's making the whole sofa match afterward. If you only work the gray seats hard, they come out brighter than the cushions that looked "fine" but carried a light film of their own, and the sofa ends up looking like a patchwork. With this many cushions in one long line, any difference in tone shows.
How we solved it
The technician cleaned the whole piece to one standard rather than chasing only the dirty areas. Every seat and back cushion and every panel of the frame got the same pre-treatment and extraction. The gray seats and the chaise center then got extra targeted passes until they matched the rest. Each cushion was finished with a rinse and dry passes, then set on edge on the frame so air could circulate on all sides and every cushion dried at the same pace.
The result
Same room. Before, the long run of seats was gray and blotchy; after, the cushions are one even cream, propped up across the frame to dry.
The chaise cushion, lifted to dry, has lost the grayed center. It was photographed while still damp.
After we leave
- Leave the cushions on edge until fully dry, usually 4–8 hours with air movers, up to 24 hours without them.
- Put them back in the same spots, then rotate and flip them every few weeks so wear stays even.
- A quick vacuum of the seats every week or two slows the next round of graying.
Fabric that has been worn thin or pilled by years of sitting doesn't come back with cleaning: that's wear, not dirt. Every job comes with our 14-day free re-clean guarantee: if you're not fully satisfied, we come back at no charge.
