This job for our team in Raleigh was a bare white mattress with yellow and brown stains scattered across the sleeping surface. Stains like these build up quietly under the sheets and only show once the bed is stripped.
What we found
A large mattress with a white knit cover and a deep quilted pattern of swirling leaves. There were brown spots near the head, yellow rings and blotches along the sides, and a cluster of darker brown marks with a pinkish haze around them on the near half.
Stains like these build up slowly. Each one soaks through the cover into the padding, dries, and darkens a little more with time. That's why older yellow marks are harder to shift than a fresh spill.
Getting started
We vacuumed the whole surface first with a mattress tool, because dust and skin flakes have to come out before anything wet goes on. Then a color test on the edge of the cover, and an oxygen-based treatment on the stains with time to work. Dry vacuuming before any treatment is the first step of our mattress cleaning in Raleigh.
The tricky part
The quilting. The cover is stitched down in deep channels, and much of the staining sat right in those grooves, where a flat cleaning tool rides over the ridges and barely touches the bottom. On a mattress you can't make up for that with more water: the padding underneath soaks it up, dries slowly, and can leave a fresh yellow ring of its own.
How we solved it
The technician kept the moisture low and worked the grooves by hand. The treatment was misted on rather than poured, then worked into the channels with a soft brush so it reached the stain instead of sitting on the ridges. Extraction was done in short, overlapping passes with the tool pressed along the line of the quilting, followed by extra dry passes to pull back as much moisture as possible. An air mover went on the mattress before we packed up.
The result
Same mattress, same corner of the room. The brown spots and blotches are gone, and the top reads as one white surface again.
Up close you can still pick out faint yellow traces where the heaviest rings were.
After we leave
- Don't make the bed or sleep on the mattress until it's fully dry: 4–8 hours with an air mover, up to 24 hours without.
- Keep the room ventilated while it dries.
- Put a washable mattress protector on once it's dry; it takes the next spill instead of the mattress.
Old yellow stains that have sat in a mattress for a long time can lighten a lot but not always disappear completely, and we'll tell you that before we start. Every job comes with our 14-day free re-clean guarantee: if you're not fully satisfied, we come back at no charge.
